2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder Debuts in New York with 375 HP

We already knew that a high-performance version of the Porsche Boxster was set to join its Cayman GT4 sibling at some point this year, but we’re seeing the car much sooner than anticipated at this week’s New York auto show. The 375-hp 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder will join the lineup later this year with a starting price of $83,095 with destination.

Most of our previous predictions on the Porsche Boxster Spyder were accurate, as Porsche has now confirmed that it will use a slightly detuned version of the 3.8-liter flat-six from the Cayman GT4 (itself a detuned version of the 911 Carrera S engine), with 10 fewer hp in the Boxster Spyder for a total of 375 hp. Like in the Cayman GT4, this engine can only be had with a six-speed manual transmission, and is the lightest model in the entire Boxster lineup, though Porsche has not yet released an official curb weight. The lightest Porsche Boxster manual has a quoted weight of 2,888 lb, so the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder should undercut that thanks to its manual top and lack of features like air-conditioning and a radio (both can be had as options).

Instead of the 911 GT3-derived suspension of the Cayman GT4, the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder’s modified chassis setup borrows brakes from the 911 Carrera S and otherwise makes do with firmer tuning, more direct steering, and an 0.8 in reduction in ride height. Performance-wise, Porsche says the Boxster Spyder can go from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and onto a top speed of 180 mph.

Visual changes to the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder amount to a more aggressive front fascia that has additional air outlets, a tasteful rear spoiler, and two streamlined farings on the rear decklid behind the seats that, like in the previous Boxster Spyder, are meant to evoke the look of the Porsche 718 Spyder from the 1960s. The driver-focused interior has standard sport seats with Spyder logos embroidered in the headrests and a smaller steering wheel compared to other Boxster models.
At a starting price of $83,095 with destination, the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder undercuts the Cayman GT4 by $2,500, but is $7,500 more dear than the 330-hp Boxster GTS. If this more hardcore roadster strikes your fancy, ordering is open now before the Boxster Spyder reaches dealerships in October.
